Rain spoils first day at the Brit Oval
Published 21 August 2007
Constant rain and bad light throughout today stopped any chance of the LV County Championship match between Surrey and Sussex at the Brit Oval starting. Nevertheless, www.surreycricket.com is excited to introduce one of the Surrey squad’s newest members for 2007, Chris Jordan, who this morning spoke exclusively to Surrey TV.
Barbados born all-rounder Chris Jordan seems to have adapted to life in England very well and wants to play for this country one day. In an exclusive interview with Surrey TV, he said, “I’m glad I signed up with Surrey, and I hope to progress with my International and First Class career here”. Although he jokes, “I came in the cold winter and I was like ‘what am I doing here?!’ But I have no regrets”.
Chris was following in the steps of fellow Bajan Ruel Braithwaite, now an MCC Universities player, when he won a scholarship to Dulwich College. He played in a game as a trialist for the school, and in his words “I guess I impressed!” It seems that Chris has impressed many people since his move to England, as after just five minutes of seeing him play, Surrey second XI coach Nadeem Shahid rang Alan Butcher in sheer excitement. Within a week, he was at first team nets.
Chris made his Surrey debut in the NatWest Pro40 league match against Middlesex at Lords this year. Speaking on this achievement Chris said “It was always good to make my debut at Lord’s, and a couple of weeks later, I was making my first class debut, which was overwhelming”. Unfortunately Surrey lost the match by six wickets, but after Chris picked up the wicket of Owais Shah, Surrey fans got to see a piece of the magic that Shahid had seen within the first few minutes of meeting him.
Chris has only played two first class matches since joining Surrey, but has still managed to notch up nine wickets, conceding only 199 runs; and with an average of 22.11, they are figures that any county bowler would be proud of. Chris admits that because it all happened so quickly, he hasn’t had time to think, and has simply “gone out there, and performed the way I know how to perform”.
At only 18 years of age, he has now achieved first team status with a major county side, and says, “the plan is to try and stay in the first team this season…but then, its back to school!” See the full interview on Surrey TV by clicking here.
