Ormond does the job

James Ormond

James Ormond has put Surrey within a whisker of victory after the third day’s play at Sophia Gardens. Chasing 176 for victory, Surrey were 122 for four when bad light stopped play.

Ormond bowled superbly taking 7-63 from 18.4 overs that helped reduce the home side to 173 all out. It was the first seven wicket haul of his career, eclipsing his previous best of 6-33 playing for Leicester against Somerset in 1998.

At tea, Surrey had Glamorgan 173 for eight and had just removed first innings danger man, Mark Wallace for 55. In the first over after the break, Ormond removed Alex Wharf and Simon Jones in quick succession with the home side failing to add to their total.

From that point on, Surrey had just 26 overs to bat and amassed 126 runs which means they require just 54 runs for victory tomorrow. Scott Newman started the run chase off at an electric pace, smashing boundary after boundary with impeccable timing. His 48 came off just 41 deliveries and included eight fours. But he was undone by a straight one from Robert Croft who had him plumb lbw not offering a shot.

Mark Ramprakash was again his usual self and finished the day unbeaten on 49. Ali Brown was the other not out batsman on seven. The other men out for Surrey were Richard Clinton for one, Graham Thorpe for five and Jonathan Batty for nine.

For Surrey, Andrew Hodd made a career best 115 for his side from 191 balls that included 16 boundaries. Neil Saker was second top score with 35 not out. The second team’s next fixture is this Sunday against Buckinghamshire in a one day match at Dinton. Scores will be available on www.surreycricket.com after the completion of this match.
