Scott Newman’s excellent double century has put him in a class of his own as he became the first Surrey player ever to score a hundred and a double hundred in the same match.

Resuming today on 46, Newman surpassed his previous best score of 183, by making 219 which included 28 fours and four sixes, giving Surrey the luxury to declare their innings on 425 for 4 at tea, setting Glamorgan the unlikely target of 525 to win.

Ironically, Mark Ramprakash had to play second fiddle to Newman who was in a particularly destructive frame of mind. The skipper still played a valuable hand but was bowled by Andrew Davies falling just three runs short of what would have been four hundreds from as many Championship matches.

Rikki Clarke and Ali Brown continued on from where Ramprakash and Newman left off with the pair adding 66 at better than a run a ball. Clarke’s dismissal for 34 from 33 balls prompted the declaration, with Ali Brown unbeaten on 42 from just 22 deliveries.

Newman’s amazing feat might not be the only milestone reached today as Surrey try and bowl the visitors out. Martin Bicknell, is just two wickets shy of 1000 wickets for Surrey, something that only 14 other Surrey players have achieved.
