New Smoking regulations at the Brit Oval this summer

Published 1 April 2007

The Brit Oval

Members and spectators coming to the Brit Oval this year should be made aware of the following smoking legislation that will come into force for the start of this season.

The new Health Act 2006 comes into effect this summer. The act prohibits smoking in almost all enclosed public spaces, as well as other designated public places. Ministers have stated that the act specifically prohibits smoking in all premises such as restaurants, pubs, bars and private members clubs.

This includes premisesthat form part of a larger building. Therefore bars, restaurants and covered concourses within a sports stadium are covered by the act. A premises owner is liable to a fine of up to £2500 for failing to prevent smoking on his premises.

Following consultation with the Members Liaison Group and approval by General Committee, a smoking ban will be in place in all of the following areas of the Brit Oval from the start of the cricket season:

  • Stands
  • Seated areas
  • Internal buildings including bars
  • Corporate hospitality areas
  • Covered Concourses

Smoking will be permitted in all the following areas:

  • Concourse walkways (uncovered) behind stands
  • Car parks
  • Forecourts

The new smoking policy will be incorporated into the ground regulations and will take effect from the first game of the 2007 season on 14 April.

The smoking areas will be clearly marked around the Brit Oval.
