Incredible Ramps sees Surrey to victory

An extraordinary innings by Mark Ramprakash saw the Surrey Brown Caps pass the Middlesex Crusaders 20 over total of 163, with four balls to spare in front of a 19,000 strong Brit Oval crowd.

Ramprakash and Jonathan Batty put together a fantastic 110 run partnership for the fourth wicket as they got their side back in the game after having floundered on 24 for three. When Batty went, it was Ramprakash who then took Surrey to victory with some ball striking of the highest class.

Middlesex won the toss and decided to make first use of the batting conditions. After losing the early wicket of Owais Shah, caught at mid-on by Ramprakash, Middlesex's captain Ed Smith displayed the sort of batting expected in Twenty20 cricket, smearing four fours in consecutive deliveries. When Smith went with the score on 37, Jamie Dalrymple ensured that the scoring rate did not drop as Middlesex raced to 61 for two after six overs.

The introduction of the spin of Nayan Doshi and Chris Schofield slowed the Crusaders scoring considerably as Eoin Morgan and Dalrymple had to settle for dropping the ball into the gaps to pick up singles. Morgan, after his blistering start never managed to get himself going again, as he went to Doshi caught in the deep. Darlymple took the Crusaders up to 144 but his classy innings of 61 came to an end in the search for quick runs.

Some lusty hitting from Tyron Henderson and Ed Joyce eventually got Middlesex up to a better than expected 163 from their 20 overs.

In reply Surrey got off to a wobbly start as their opener James Benning went in the second over with the score on just 12. Ali Brown, who had struck a couple of nice boundaries went in the fourth and with just 24 on the board Mark Butcher was caught at second slip first ball.

This brought Ramprakash and Batty together and the pair went about repairing some of the damage. With the light fading quickly they managed to get the equation to 83 required from the remaining nine overs. Batty struck a huge six and followed it up with a swept four which got the momentum up for the Brown Caps. Sadly the partnership was broken when Surrey's wicket keeper was stumped off the bowling of Ben Hutton just one short of his fifty.

This set the stage for Ramprakash, who kept his head to smash a few boundaries, all the while getting some good support from Azhar Mahmood at the other end. With 16 needed off the final two overs, he followed up a straight four with a flat six over the legside boundary. A brilliant penultimate over meant that Surrey required just five from the last six balls. Ramprakash needed just the two as he followed up yet another cover driven four with an enormous six into the Pavilion to give Surrey victory with just four balls to spare and he himself finishing on 85 from only 52 balls.
