Read the latest report from the Surrey second eleven's match with Hampshire after the second day's play.

Surrey Second XI resumed their innings on the second morning with the score on 48 for one in reply to Hampshire’s 430-6 declared. There was early swing and movement for bowlers James Bruce and David Griffiths under heavy cloud cover and Rory Hamilton-Brown fell, bowled by Griffiths, in the second over of the day without adding to his overnight score of 31. He was replaced at the crease by Richard Clinton, batting unusually at number four in the order. Clinton started his innings warily adding only nine runs in a partnership of 35 with Stewart Walters, but after Walters was dismissed, caught at first slip, for 44, the left-hander took control, giving a masterclass in the art of building an innings. He added 112 in a stand with wicketkeeper Gary Wilson (47) in a little over two hours and 110 with Chris Jordan whose fighting 51 not out came from 117 balls.

Clinton was finally out for 130 immediately after tea. His innings had lasted 282 minutes, 199 balls and included a six and twenty fours. This was his second century of the season and he is now averaging 98.5 in second XI championship matches.

After Clinton’s dismissal on 307 the new ball was introduced with dramatic effect as Bruce picked up the wickets of Nayan Doshi and Simon King and the innings petered out to 324-8 when the captain declared, 106 behind the visitors’ score. For Hampshire James Tomlinson had taken 3-82, David Griffiths 2-62 and James Bruce 2-43.

Twenty five overs remained to be played on the day. The Hampshire innings began steadily as openers Kevin Latouf and Liam Dawson put on 63 before Dawson was neatly stumped by Gary Wilson off the bowling of Richard Clinton. Wilson had a second victim when he caught Captain Chris Benham off the bowling of Nayan Doshi when the score was 93. The day closed with Kevin Latouf unbeaten on 34 accompanied by night watchman David Griffiths and the Hampshire total 94 for two. Hampshire are now 200 ahead and there are good prospects of an exciting run chase with Surrey batting last on the third day of the match.
