Bad Light Stifled A Great Start To The Season
Published 19 April 2008
It was a very frustrating day for players and spectators alike at the Brit Insurance Oval as the weather got the better of us all. Heavy clouds smothered South London all day and therefore no play was possible due to bad light.
At 1:30 pm there was some activity as the Surrey players were given the word to prepare to take the field. However, as 1:45 came around the umpires George Sharp and Peter Hartley took to the field and unfortunately the light had changed, sending the players back into the dressing rooms.
The final day was finally called off at 4:30 pm when light rain descended on the Brit Insurance Oval.
It was a dark end to what was a very bright start for Surrey in the LV County Championship. A good first two days put Surrey into a commanding position that was built on hundreds by Mark Ramprakash, Mark Butcher and Usman Afzaal. Following the match Usman Afzaal chatted with Surrey TV about his maiden Surrey hundred. Click here to watch. Following some positive bowling on Friday Surrey had Lancashire six wickets down and still needing 147 runs to avoid the follow-on. Mark Butcher would have liked to been able to pick up the remaining 4 wickets to have a second go at Lancashire, but it wasn’t to be.
Surrey also missed out on the chance to collect maximum bowling points as the game ended as a draw and 11 points were gained.
Surrey captain Mark Butcher reflected on the good performance on Surrey TV. Click here to watch.
