Another Ramps century can't save Surrey defeat

Mark Ramprakash

Another flawless century from Mark Ramprakash could not save Surrey from crashing to an innings and 79 run defeat at the hands of Kent at Whitgift School today.

Ramprakash and Ali Brown resumed play this morning with the soul objective of batting through the day to save the match for Surrey. The pair started the morning well with Brown smashing the ball to the boundary in typical style to race his score up to the half century mark.

Meanwhile Ramprakash was a great deal more reserved, knocking the ball into the gaps to pick up the singles while his partner took the attack to Kent’s bowlers. Unusual fields set by Kent’s skipper, Robert Key allowed Brown to take advantage as Surrey moved past 200.

However shortly before lunch, the tide turned as the home side lost three wickets in no time to completely destroy the morning’s work. Brown was bowled by James Tredwell for 68 and only 17 runs later Ian Salisbury and Rikki Clarke fell in consecutive Ryan McLaren deliveries to leave Surrey struggling on 227 for six.

Ramprakash continued to play his way, but could only watch from the other end as the wickets crumbled around him. Matthew Nicholson was the final casualty before the break as Surrey stared at defeat on 248 for seven.

After lunch, Kent inevitably set the field back for Ramprakash to give him the single and bowl as much at the Surrey tail as possible. Neil Saker provided steady support for Ramprakash, however after putting together a partnership 35, the young quick succumbed to a moving delivery from McLaren to be caught at first slip.

There was time for Ramprakash to bring up the 92nd century of his career but soon after, the game was over, as Kent picked up the wicket of Nayan Doshi and then the centurion to wrap up victory by an innings and 79 runs as Surrey were bowled out for 319.
