Surrey Cricket Festival at Whitgift

In 2008 the Whitgift Cricket Festival at Croydon’s Whitgift School played host to Surrey CCC’s Friends Provident Trophy match against Sussex and the Liverpool Victoria (LV) Championship game against Somerset.

Once again the Whitgift Festival provided five days of fantastic cricket, with great shot makers and bowlers parading their talents. In the Friends Provident Trophy match, bad weather prematurely ended play, but not before the crowd were treated to a powerful batting performance by the Brown Caps; racing to 189-5 from just 24 overs.

In the LV County Championship match, Surrey could not overcome a strong Somerset side, which included former Test batsmen, Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer. Surrey lost the match by eight wickets, but there were impressive performances from Jade Dernbach (taking a career best 6-72 in Somerset's first innings); Scott Newman who made two half centuries and a blistering 69 from James Benning, which included 11 boundaries.

About the Whitgift Festival

Surrey CCC play primarily at the Brit Oval, but the club also holds home matches at the Whitgift School. In 2006 Surrey CCC announced that the Whitgift would host festival cricket until at least 2010. This means that a minimum of one limited overs and one first-class County Championship match per year will be played at The Whitgift until 2010. Information about the 2009 Whitgift Festival will appear on our site later this year.
