Guildford Festival

This year's Guildford Festival of Cricket saw Surrey County Cricket Club play Yorkshire CCC in the Natwest Pro40 and Durham CCC in the Liverpool Victoria (LV) Championship.

Once again, the Guildford Festival played host to five days of high quality cricket with some of the biggest names in world cricket on display. Surrey ultimately lost by ten wickets to a strong Durham side that included England players Steve Harmison, Liam Plunkett and Phil Mustard, as well as, West Indian star Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

The Surrey side can take a huge positive from the performance of Scott Newman who scored 178 runs in the match, including a high class 113 in the first innings. The star for the Durham side was not one of their internationals but former Durham University student, Will Smith, who scored his maiden first-class double hundred with consummate ease and patience. He scored 201 not out in Durham’s total of 410 spending just under ten hours at the crease.

In the Friends Provident Trophy match, the Brown Caps narrowly lost to the Yorkshire Carnegie as they fell 11 runs short of the victory target. A highlight for the Brown Caps was the return to form of Chris Schofield following his thumb injury, Schofield scored 58 off just 44 balls.

Information on next year's Guildford festival will be available early in 2009.
