Surrey Cricket Groundsman’s Association (SCGA)

The SCGA was set up in December 2003 to raise the profile of this area of work within the county. The membership is made up of groundsmen from schools and clubs, committee representatives from clubs, local authority personnel and contractors.   • Annual Conference
    This years SCGA Conference was held on Tuesday 4th March. The following topics were discussed:
    1) ECB Programme Update by Tim Nicholls
    2) Sherriff Amenity – Native Casting Worms
    3) Total Turf Solutions – Pitch Preparation
    4) Alex Vickers – Rolling Research Update
    5) Mark Ilott – Ram Sports Equipment
    6) SCGA – AGM
    7) Q & A Panel with Chris Wood (ECB)
  • Demonstrations Days of new machinery / techniques are staged
  • Trips to other cricketing venues such as Lords’ and The Rosebowl are organised.
  • Access to IOG (Institute of Groundsmanship) training courses.
  • A Mentoring Schemesponsored by Sherriff Amenity to help further develop groundsman. The scheme takes the form of a hands on approach to groundmanship with the students having individual programmes based on their qualifications and experience. All the aspect of the practical art of producing wickets, maintaining / renovating the square and outfield are covered. The SCGA Mentors include: Bill Clutterbuck (head groundsman at Guildford CC) Paul Brind (head groundsman at Wimbledon CC).
  • Access to the Pitch Advisory Team Service The project has placed advisors across England and Wales and their activities are fully embraced into the work of the County Cricket Boards – Roger Ward and John Dodwell are the ECB Pitch Advisors for Surrey their role is to deliver two types of ground / pitch assessments with support from a team of experienced groundsman within the County.
